Aww, yes. The Shower. If you are a parent of a toddler, like myself, the shower can be a safe haven, a place to escape to your thoughts for five minutes a day. Yet, in romance and erotica books, the shower is one of the go-to places for a sex scene.
The characters are clean (at their bodies are). They are conveniently naked. There's steam from the shower head. Their skin is slippery. You see where I'm going with this.
The shower love scene can have some beautifully erotic moments. The pick-up and hold against the side of the shower. The visual of a guy's long hair falling in their face. The water rivers off their abs. The dewy glow to the female main characters skin. The steam making them all hot and bothered. Not to mention easy post coital clean-up.
Yet, as a realist, I can see some downsides to IRL shower sex. (Let's keep in mind that nobody reads Romance or Erotica for realism. I read it for escapism, fantasy.) Real life downsides that are almost never mentioned in written love scenes: Slippery floor. What if you slip and end up on your ass? (and not in the good way!) Cramped space. Not a lot of room for movement so you gotta be creative. You're going to have to re-shower anyways. You're not going to want to shave your armpits in a crowded shower.
I'd love to read more books with great shower love-making scenes. Got any recommendations? Drop it in the comments below!
